Safety symbols are raised at Union Square. The white flag symbolized that San Francisco went for a 24-hour period without a traffic death. It was taken down anytime there was a fatal traffic accident, and a black flag would be raised. Shown above are a white flag in 1944 with the words “Keep the White Flag Flying” and a black flag in 1936 with the words “Another Traffic Death.” In the modern view of an accident site below, an anonymous person has spray-painted the outline of a body, the date, and the cause of death.
